How to Create a Romantic Backyard Picnic Camp on a Budget?

Hey everyone, welcome back to my blog! I hope you’re all doing great. Today, I’m excited to share a beautiful idea for a backyard date or picnic setup that’s perfect for couples.
Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning a cozy brunch, or just want to switch up your date night, this simple yet elegant setup will transform your backyard into a romantic getaway.
The best part? It’s affordable and can be done using items you already have at home or can easily find at budget-friendly stores.
Let’s dive into how you can create this intimate backyard camping experience that feels more like a cozy room than your typical outdoor campsite!

Table of Contents

Step 1: Setting Up the Tent

To start, I chose an all-season outdoor tent from the brand Coleman, which I purchased at Target. It’s the perfect size for two people, making it great for a romantic setup.
Setting up the tent was super easy—there were picture tutorials right on the box, which made the whole process quick and smooth.
Once the tent was up, the next priority was to make it comfortable inside. Since I wanted to ensure the couple had a cozy, elevated experience, I decided to get creative with the bedding.
Instead of just using sleeping bags or air mattresses, I grabbed a blow-up mattress we no longer use and placed a layer of cardboard underneath it.
This helped raise the bed off the ground, adding some insulation to prevent the cold from seeping in. To make it even more comfortable, I spread a soft comforter over the blow-up mattress to create a plush base for the couple.

Step 2: Creating a Comfy Interior

The goal here was to make the inside of the tent feel more like a romantic bedroom rather than a typical outdoor campsite.
The couple requested mostly white decor, so I went with white bedding for the majority of the setup. On top of the comforter, I placed another white sheet and then added a second white comforter for that extra luxurious feel.
For pillows, I found some beautiful cushions from Five Below—just $5 each!—and scattered them around the tent to create a cozy and inviting space. I also placed another blanket on the side for additional warmth, which also came from Five Below, costing just $5.
It was amazing how affordable everything was, and the space was already starting to feel like a cozy retreat!

Step 3: Adding Romantic Decor

Now, let’s talk about the decor, which is my favorite part! Most of the items I used were things I already had around the house, and I spent about $50 on extras from Ross, Five Below, and Dollar Tree. This setup was not only simple but incredibly cost-effective.
To start, I used an old side table I had stored away in the garage. I placed this next to the bed to display some candles and a vase filled with flowers.
I wanted to make the tent feel more romantic and intimate, so I placed a soft white rug at the foot of the bed to add warmth and texture. The combination of the fluffy rug and the all-white bedding really gave the tent a romantic and luxurious atmosphere.
For an extra touch of personalization, I added a few items that the couple could connect with. I used battery-operated candles from my bookshelf (safety first!) and placed them around the bed and table for a warm, ambient glow.
I also picked up some wooden initials to represent their names—Jamie and Jacob—and placed them alongside a “LOVE” sign I found at Dollar Tree. Little details like these made the space feel personal and thoughtful.

Step 4: Lighting and Outdoor Walkway

Lighting plays a huge role in setting the mood, especially for a romantic evening outdoors. I wanted to create a soft, enchanting glow around the tent, so I used a combination of string lights and candle holders to light up the walkway leading to the tent.
I found some beautiful candle holders at Dollar Tree and added tea lights to them to line the path. Not only did this create a beautiful visual effect, but it also made the whole experience feel more intimate and special. I also placed a diffuser on the small table inside the tent, adding some essential oils to bring a calming scent to the space.
For the exterior lighting, I strung lights across the sides and front of the tent. It wasn’t overly bright, but it added just enough glow to make the space feel magical once the sun set.

Step 5: Adding Personal Touches and Comfort

Since the original plan was for a black-and-white theme, I decided to keep the overall decor in line with that but added a few pops of color.

I found a red bath towel that I rolled into the shape of a heart, placed it near the bed, and made two towel swans to add a cute, romantic detail.

I also added a small teddy bear in the corner of the tent to bring in some more warmth and personality.

Outside the tent, I placed two chairs near the fire pit so the couple could come out and enjoy roasting marshmallows or just cozying up to the fire.

To complete the look, I added some torches and plants around the tent to make it feel more like home and less like a campsite.

Step 6: A Quick Tour and Final Thoughts

The fireplace was lit, the tent was glowing, and everything was in place for a perfect night under the stars. Inside the tent, everything came together beautifully.

The soft white bedding, romantic lighting, and cozy decor made it feel like a mini-bedroom set right in the backyard.

As for the walkway, it was actually a white shower curtain! Yes, that’s right—a shower curtain. You can get so creative with what you have around the house, and no one will ever know (except you and me, of course!). It worked perfectly as a path leading to the tent, adding a clean and stylish touch.
I hope this setup inspires you to create your own backyard camping experience. Remember, you don’t have to break the bank to create something beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Plus, it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors without leaving the comfort of your home.
